제가 작업한 종이 위에 담겨진 세상은 유쾌한 상상의 세계입니다. 이 현현한 영역 안으로 들어가면 하지 못할 것도, 되지 못할 것도 없습니다. 제 그림은 실제의 자연을 사생함이지만 실재를 추구하기보다는 정신적인 활력을 통해 외부세계를 체득하는 그 어떤 통로라고 할 수 있습니다. 작업하는 과정을 통해 갈 수 있고(可行), 볼 수 있으며(可望), 머무를 수 있고(可居), 노닐 수 있는(可遊) 유희의 장입니다.
제가 인식하는 자연은 자주 가지 못하고, 그로 인해 즐기지 못하는 결핍의 대상입니다. 그에 대한 반동으로 자연을 상징하고 대체하는 거벽산을 공간 속으로 들여와 1차 가공하고 중국의 기서(奇書)인 산해경에 나오는 뮤즈인 제강과 그림 속에서 노니는 작은 사람들을 배치하는 일종의 피규어 놀이를 하고 있습니다. 특히 작품 <기억을 담은 책가도>에는 다양한 미술관에 대한 경험을 예술의 애정을 담아 이상적 공간에 배치했습니다. 이 작품을 통해 바쁜 현실을 사는 현대인들이 생활 속에서 조그만 정원(가산)을 통해 경계(境界)를 느끼고 또 즐길 수 있기를 바랍니다.
The world I depict on paper is a realm of delightful imagination. Within this manifested domain, there is nothing that cannot be done, no form that cannot be realized. Though my drawings stem from observing real landscapes, their essence lies not in the pursuit of actuality, but in channeling spiritual vitality—a pathway to internalize the outer world. Through the act of painting, I create a space of playful reverie: one that is navigable (可行), beholdable (可望), inhabitable (可居), and wanderable (可遊).
To me, nature is an elusive presence—often out of reach, and therefore never fully embraced. As a response to this absence, I symbolically draw nature into my work through monumental mountain forms. These are partially processed within the space of my canvas and inhabited by mythic figures drawn from Shan Hai Jing, such as Je-gang, my imagined muse. Alongside her, tiny human characters roam the pictorial world in what might be likened to a ritual of figure-play.
In particular, my piece Chaekgado: A Garden of Memories reimagines various art museums I’ve visited, placing them within a dreamlike architectural landscape shaped by my affection for art itself. I hope that modern viewers, in the rush of daily life, may find in this symbolic garden (gasan, 家山) a boundary (gyeonggye, 境界) where stillness and delight quietly coexist.
