강태영은 가구를 매개로 ‘나다움’을 표현하는 디자이너이자 제작자다. 서울예술대학 실내디자인과를 졸업, 가람가구학교에서 가구디자인 과정을 수료하며 재료와 구조, 손과 감각의 언어를 체계적으로 익혔다. 이후 디자인 스튜디오 Mobelplus를 기반으로 본격적인 창작 활동을 이어가고 있다.

그는 ‘하고 싶은 일을 하고 싶다’는 단순하면서도 직관적인 마음에서 출발해, 가구라는 실용적인 매체를 통해 자기 정체성과 감각의 결을 조형해왔다. 작업 초기에는 단순히 사물의 기능성과 디자인적 아름다움에 주목했지만, 시간이 흐를수록 그가 가구에 담고자 하는 것은 더욱 내밀한 감정과 사유가 되었다.

강태영에게 있어 나무는 가장 진실한 파트너다. 나무의 결을 읽고, 그 안에 스며든 시간을 어루만지며, 때로는 생각을 머금은 채 조심스럽게 시작하고, 때로는 무계획 속에 직관으로 손을 움직인다. 그렇게 깎이고 이어진 결과물은 어느 순간 그의 무의식과 감정의 단면을 고스란히 품는다. 작업 도중 문득 ‘내가 왜 이걸 이렇게 만들고 있었을까?’ 하고 돌아보는 그 순간, 그는 비로소 자기 자신을 이해하게 되고, 그것이 다시 다음 작업으로 이어지는 동력이 된다.

그의 가구는 단순히 쓰이는 도구를 넘어서, 공간의 분위기를 형성하고, 감정을 환기시키며, 하나의 존재처럼 침묵 속에서 말을 건넨다. 일상과 예술의 경계, 사물성과 내면성의 교차점에서 탄생한 그의 작품들은 조용히 그러나 깊이 있게 관객과 마주한다.



Tae-young Kang is a designer and maker who explores authentic selfhood through the language of furniture. He studied Interior Design at Seoul Institute of the Arts and completed a furniture design program at Garam Furniture School, where he developed a structured understanding of material, structure, craftsmanship, and sensory expression. Centering his creative journey around his studio, Mobelplus, Kang has continued to explore and express himself through the practical medium of furniture.

His creative drive stems from a simple yet honest impulse: to do what I want to do. While his early work focused on function and aesthetic completion, his practice has gradually turned inward—toward emotion and introspection. His furniture has become a vessel for feeling and thought, and a language for self-understanding.

For Kang, wood is his most sincere partner. He reads the grain, traces the time embedded in the material, and lets his hands move—sometimes with caution, sometimes with pure instinct. Each carved and assembled piece quietly holds fragments of his subconscious and emotion. In moments of reflection—“Why was I making it this way?”—he comes face to face with himself, and that insight becomes the momentum for his next creation.
