예전부터 있었던 전통도시의 옛 고지도를 보면 그곳 관리자가 활동하던 동헌 등의 건물과 임금이나 높은 관리직의 인물이 들리면 머물던 객사, 교육 시설인 향교 혹은 불사를 진행하던 사찰 등이 주요 읍치 시설로 자리를 하고 자연스럽게 민가와 그 밖의 삶의 공간들이 자리를 잡은 모습을 볼 수 있다.

이런 곳일수록 시간이 지나면 큰 변화를 겪는데 높고 든든한 산을 등지고 있어 바람을 막아 안온한 공간에 높은 산이 있으니 자연스럽게 물이 흘러 넉넉한 수량이 있고 평탄한 지역과 향의 입지가 그 공간이 확대될 수 있는 조건이 되기 때문인 것 같다. 이러한 전통도시의 고지도는 보편적인 형식을 갖추고 있고 그 수가 상당히 많아서 우리 땅의 근원을 살피며 답사와 스케치를 하는 입장에서는 변해가는 것과 변하지 않은 것을 관찰할 수 있는 든든한 요소가 된다.

내 그림에 언제부터인가 건물들이 등장하게 되는데 확대되어가는 도시공간이 건물들과 그 밖의 구조물로 채워지면서 자연스럽게 이러한 것들의 이미지가 그림 속으로 드러나게 되는 결과인 것 같다. 대개의 이러한 구조물은 직선적이고 복잡하고 세밀한 표현기법을 구사해야 되는데 세필을 사용하게 되는 것도 자연스러운 결과로 보여진다.

상기한 대상을 관찰하며 그림의 소재로 도모해 보면서 우리가 살고 있는 도시공간이 늘 있어왔던 것이 아니고 오랜 시간을 겪으면서 그 이미지들이 변화를 거듭해 왔다는 것을 다시 한번 숙고해 보게 된다.



When looking at old maps of traditional cities that have existed for centuries, we can observe how key administrative buildings—such as Dongheon (the government office), Gaeksa (guesthouses for kings or high-ranking officials), Hyanggyo (Confucian schools), or Buddhist temples used for religious practices—were typically established as central township facilities. Around these, private residences and other everyday living spaces naturally took shape.

These areas tended to undergo significant transformation over time. With towering, solid mountains behind to shield them from the wind, these spaces offered a sense of protection and warmth. The mountainous terrain ensured a generous water flow, and the presence of flat land and favorable topography further supported urban expansion. Such conditions often became catalysts for a city's growth. Old maps of traditional cities, which were drawn in a relatively consistent and standardized manner and remain in large numbers today, serve as a reliable reference point for those engaged in site surveys and sketching. They allow us to closely observe the contrast between what has changed and what has endured.

At some point, buildings began to appear in my paintings. As the urban landscape expanded, filling up with architectural structures and infrastructure, their forms naturally found their way into my work. Most of these constructions are linear, complex, and require a high degree of precision in expression. Using fine brushes (sepil) thus became an inevitable result of this shift.

As I observe these subjects and consider them as themes for my art, I am reminded that the cityscape we live in today is not a given. It is the product of a long process of transformation, one whose shifting imagery continues to unfold across time.
