민수연
나는 ‘나를 스치는 모든 것이 슬프다’는 감각에서 출발해, 시간의 유한함과 존재의 덧없음에서 비롯된 슬픔과 고독을 시각화한다. 어린 시절부터 집과 창문, 불빛에 얽힌 기억은 내 작업의 중요한 토대가 되었다. 어두워져야 비로소 빛나는 창의 불빛, 그 안에서 언뜻언뜻 비추는 그림자를 바라보던 감각은 지금까지 내 안에 남아 있다. 불빛이 켜진 집은 따뜻하고 행복해 보였고, 나는 그 불빛을 세며 어디에도 속하지 못한 듯한 쓸쓸함을 느꼈다.
이러한 감각은 낯선 장소를 여행할 때에도 이어진다. 관광지가 아닌 타지의 일상적인 공간에서, 나는 완전한 타인으로 변모해 주변 사람들의 삶을 관찰한다. 그들의 작은 일상을 바라보는 순간, 과거의 기억이 현재와 겹쳐진다. “떠날 운명을 지닌 존재”로서, 빛과 거울, 반사의 장치를 통해 안과 밖, 머무름과 떠남의 경계를 모호하게 풀어내고자 한다. 작품은 시선의 이동에 따라 끊임없이 변주되며, 영화의 롱테이크 처럼 시간의 흐름을 담은 장면으로 작동한다.
그러면서도 형식적으로는 집요하게 ‘입체성 안에서의 평면성’을 다룬다. 평면은 세계를 인식하는 기본적인 틀이지만 동시에 시야를 제한하는 억압적 장치이기도 하다. 그래서 입체를 빌리되 다시 평면으로 회귀한다. 거울, 아크릴, 포맥스, 조명은 단순한 재료를 넘어 드로잉을 쌓아 올리는 조형적 언어다. 관객이 한 발짝 움직이는 순간 장면은 달라지고, 회화가 전제로 삼아온 고정된 시점과 조명의 질서를 해체한다.
동시에 나의 작업은 기억과 감정을 되짚는 과정이기도 하다. 어린 시절엔 공간을 몸 전체로 받아들였다. 집 안 물건 하나하나를 외우듯 바라보던 시선과, 텅 빈 집에 혼자 남겨졌을 때의 감각은 지금까지도 생생하다. 그 시간 속의 나는 단지 보고 듣는 존재가 아니라, 공간을 온몸으로 체화했다. 그리고 그 기억은 어머니와 나를 동시에 바라보려는 시도로 이어졌다. 이해되지 못했던 순간들을 다시 되짚어 보면서, 사랑과 슬픔이 뒤섞인 복합적인 감정을 받아들이는 과정이다.
일상의 장면에서 겹쳐 보이는 과거와 현재, 타인의 모습 속에서 발견하는 흔적은 늘 이상하게 슬프다. 그림 속 대상은 특별히 불행한 사람이 아닌, 나 또는 나의 주변인과 공통분모를 가진 인물이다. 평범한 장면 속에서 관찰자의 감정이 얹혀질 때, 이상하게 슬픈 순간이 연출된다. 나는 그 장면을 담담히 기록하면서, 동시에 아끼고 이해하는 마음을 담으려 한다.
결국 나의 모든 작업은 개인적 기억에서 출발하지만, 존재의 자리와 보는 행위의 본질을 탐구하는 여정으로 확장된다. 우리는 모두 어느 공간의 객이며, 그 장면을 응시함과 동시에 그 안에 존재하는 자로서 삶과 지각의 경계에 서 있다. 나는 그 경계의 자리에서 각자의 삶을 다시 감각하길 바란다.
I begin from the feeling that ‘everything that brushes past me is sad’, and I visualize the sadness and solitude that arise from the finiteness of time and the transience of existence. Memories tied to home, windows, and light have been a key foundation of my work since childhood. The window that only shines once it is dark, the shadows that flicker inside it, these sensations remain within me. A house with its lights on looked warm and happy, and as I counted those lights I felt a loneliness, as if I belonged nowhere.
This feeling continues when I travel to unfamiliar places. In everyday spaces rather than tourist sites, I become a complete outsider and observe the lives of those around me. In the moment of looking at their small routines, past memories overlap with the present. As a ‘being destined to depart’, I use light, mirrors, and devices of reflection to blur the boundaries between inside and outside, staying and leaving. The work varies continuously as the gaze moves, and it functions like a long take in film, holding the flow of time in a scene.
Formally, I persistently address ‘flatness within three dimensionality’. The flat picture plane is a basic frame for perceiving the world, but it is also a device that restricts the field of view. So I borrow three dimensionality, then return to the plane. Mirrors, acrylic, foamex, and lighting are more than simple materials, they are a sculptural language that builds up drawing. The moment a viewer takes a step, the scene changes, and the fixed viewpoint and lighting order that painting has assumed are dismantled.
At the same time, my work is a process of retracing memory and emotion. As a child, I received space with my whole body. The gaze with which I looked, as if memorizing each object in the house, and the feeling of being left alone in an empty home, are vivid even now. In that time I was not only one who saw and heard, I embodied space with my whole body. That memory led to an attempt to look at my mother and myself at the same time. By revisiting moments that were not understood, it becomes a process of accepting the mixed emotions of love and sorrow.
In everyday scenes where past and present appear overlapped, and in traces found in the figures of others, there is always a strange sadness. The subjects in the paintings are not people who are especially unfortunate, they are figures who share common ground with me or those around me. When the observer’s emotion rests on an ordinary scene, a strangely sad moment is produced. I try to record that moment plainly, while also including a feeling of care and understanding.
In the end, all of my work begins with personal memory, but it expands into a journey that examines the place of existence and the nature of seeing. We are all guests of some space, and while we look at a scene, we also exist within it, standing at the boundary of life and perception. From that boundary, I hope we will sense each person’s life again.
