SIM MYUNGBO
심명보
한국 화단에서 추상화가로 활발히 활동하며 미술대학교에서 교수직을 겸임하던 심명보 화백은 1980년대 중반 뉴욕으로 활동무대를 옮긴다. 그곳에서 그는 그동안 자신을 감싸고 있던 예술의 틀을 깨고 자신만의 색깔과 언어를 찾으며 뉴욕을 중심으로 세계를 무대로 활동을 해왔다.
뉴욕생활 중 수채화의 거장 마리오 쿠퍼(Mario Cooper)와의 만남은 그의 수채화의 형식에 큰 변화를 일으켰고. 그의 뉴욕생활 초창기의 장미와 맨하튼을 주제로 한 수채화들은 그의 호기심과, 감동, 깨달음으로 가득한 그만의 예술적 격동의 시기를 반영하고 있다.
1990년대에 이르러 그는 “Festival of Light (빛의 축제)” 라는 주제로 비구상과 구상의 경계를 넘나드는 작업을 하며 그만의 ‘새로운 형식’과 ‘새로운 언어’를 찾아가기 시작한다. 이 시기 그의 작품들은 그의 ‘실험성’과 ‘사고의 단순화’ 과정을 잘 보여준다.
다양한 예술적 표현에 대한 실험 사고의 단순화를 거친 그는 1990년대 중반부터 장미를 주제로 한 작업들을 주로 하기 시작하며 ‘장미 화가’로 알려지게 된다. 그의 거대한 장미는 단순히 그 피사체의 아름다움을 묘사하는 것이 아니라 그의 유년의 기억과, 환희와 아픔 등 그의 삶의 과정들을 머금고 있다고 그는 고백한다.
1999년 그는 2000년 새로운 Millenium을 앞두고 그의 예술가로서의 삶 중에 가장 거대한 장미를 그리게 된다. 1999송이의 장미 송이들이 모여 이뤄낸 거대한 한송이의 장미는 2000송이 장미 ‘Passion for the New Millenium’을 탄생시킨다.
이후 그는 장미를 주제로 한 ‘장미 무한’ 시리즈 작업을 하며 다시금 추상에 대한 그의 충동과 열정을 반영하는 작품들을 보여주기 시작한다. 많은 작가의 개인적인 삶의 변화를 지나면서 그의 장미 또한 진화한다.
The artist, who was active as a Western painter in Korean and concurrently held a professorship at an art university, suddenly moved to New York in the mid-1980s. There, he breaks the frame of art that has been surrounding him and finds his own artistic color and language.
He is active around the world based in New York. While living in New York, he met Mario Cooper, a master of watercolor painting, and caused a great change in the form of his watercolor painting. The watercolors of roses and Manhattan in the early days of his life in New York reflect his artistic turbulent times full of curiosity, emotion and enlightenment.
In the 1990s, with the theme of “Festival of Light,” he began to search for his own ‘new form’ and ‘new language’ by working across the boundaries between abstractive and figurative. His works during this period well show his 'experimentation' and process of 'simplification of thinking’.
After undergoing experimental and a simplification of thinking for various artistic expressions, he began to work mainly on roses in the mid-1990s and became known as a ‘rose artist’. He confesses that his huge roses do not simply depict the beauty of their blooms, but contain his childhood memories, joy and pain, and other journeys of his life.
In 1999, ahead of the new Millenium, he painted the biggest rose in his artistic career. One huge rose made of 1999 roses brings birth of 2000 roses, ‘Passion for the New Millenium’.
Afterwards, he started to show works that reflect his impulse and passion for abstractive art again while working on the rose-themed “Infinite Roses” series. His roses evolve as the artist goes through changes in his personal life.
