유쾌한 기억선택증: 뉴욕스러운 욕망들
이번 전시는 유쾌함으로 이식되어 있는 물질적, 감정적 욕망의 기억들을 선택적으로 소급 반추하면서, 그 기억의 오브제를 선택적 편집과 여러 미디움을 통해 입체적인 스토리로 표현하고자 했다. 뉴욕이 작가에게 건네 준 유쾌한 기억 속 사람들, 오브제, 텍스트들. 그리고 예술적 영감의 순간들을 작가는 파편적 이미지로 콜라주 하여 촘촘하게 잘 짜여진, 하나의 입체적인 ‘뉴욕스러운 욕망 이야기 ‘로 스토리텔링 하고자 했다. 특히, 욕망과 영감의 도시 뉴욕이라는 ‘즉시 적인 현장성’은 작가에게 시대와 공간을 초월해 앤디워홀과 쟝미쉘 바스키아로부터 받은 영감의 에너지를 한층 더 증폭시켰다. 그 위대한 두 명의 작가들을 작품 속으로 과감히 끌고 들어와 ‘상징적 의미가 담긴 협업 요소’ 로 오마주 했으며 이는 작가의 뉴욕스러운 욕망의 순간들을 재치 있고 유쾌하게 드러내는데 기여하고 있다. 특히 욕망과 영감의 도시 뉴욕에서 작가가 낯선 이방인 예술가로 장기 체류하면서 작가의 유쾌한 시각과 관점으로 몸소 보고 듣고 느낀 물질적, 감각적, 예술적 욕망의 순간들을 지극히 개인적이고 주관적인 필터링을 거쳐 뉴욕의 다양한 욕망을 여러 매체를 통해 (설치, 조각, 영상, 페인팅, 콜라주) 유쾌하게 표현하고 있다.
Cheerful Selective Memory: New York Desires
This exhibition selectively revisits memories of material and emotional desire that have been recast as a sense of cheer. By choosing the objects of those memories, then editing them and working across multiple media, the artist develops them into a three dimensional story. People, objects, and texts from the cheerful memories New York offered, and moments of artistic inspiration, are collaged as fragmentary images to form a tightly woven, multi layered ‘New York like tale of desire’.
In particular, New York as a city of desire and inspiration, with its ‘immediacy of the site’, amplified the energy of inspiration the artist received from Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat across time and space. He boldly brings these two great artists into the work as ‘collaborative elements with symbolic meaning’ in homage, which helps reveal his New York like moments of desire with wit and lightness.
Living for an extended period in New York as a foreign artist, the artist observed, heard, and felt moments of material, sensory, and artistic desire. After passing them through a highly personal and subjective filter, he expresses New York’s varied desires across multiple media (installation, sculpture, video, painting, collage) with a sense of cheer.
