보자기를 통해 주는 이가 받는 이에게 보내는 존중과 배려의 마음이 표현되기를 바랐고 나아가 그 안에 품고 있는 ‘특별한 궁금증과 설렘’을 느끼게 하고 싶었다. 보자기는 본래 물건을 싸서 운반하는 실용적인 목적이 있으나 내 작품으로 표현되는 보자기 형상은 시각적 이미지를 넘어 상대방과 소통의 역할을 하는 동시에 세상의 모든 것을 품고자 하는 포용성에 의미를 두고 있다. 사물들이 감추어져 그 보자기 속에 무엇인지는 알 수 없지만 "The Precious Message"라는 작품 명제에서 말하듯 포장된 도구의 특별한 장식성으로 인해 이미 소중하고 특별한 전언일 것으로 읽혀 지게 만들고 있다.
서양의 딱딱한 가방은 한정된 공간 안에 물건을 넣을 수 있게 되어 있지만 동양의 부드러운 보자기는 작은 것이든 큰 것이든 포용할 수 있는 유동적 넓이와 품을 지닌 물건이다. 자연이든 인간이든 무생물이든 아픈 사연이나 상처를 품고 보듬어주며 나아가 치유의 의미까지도 내포한 보자기라는 모티브는 내게 너무나 매력적이다. 우리의 보자기에는 무엇을 싸든 간에 그 형태가 다르다. 둥근 것을 싸면 둥글게, 길쭉한 것을 싸면 길쭉하게, 납작한 것을 싸면 납작해지고 쌀 게 없으면 평면으로 돌아가는 요술까지 부린다.
국문학자 고 이어령 선생님은 이렇게 말했다. “만약 모든 도구, 모든 시설들이 가방이 아니라 보자기처럼 디자인되어 유무상통의 철학을 담게 된다면 앞으로의 인류문명은 좀 더 인간적이고 좀 더 편하지 않겠는가.” 게다가 보자기에는 이러한 융통성만 있는 게 아니다. 그 속에 무엇을 비밀스레 간직했는지 호기심을 불러일으킨다. 소중한 무엇인가를 감싼 보자기의 한쪽 매듭을 풀면 고이 간직해 온 이야기보따리가 무한히 펼쳐질 것만 같다.
Through bojagi, I hoped that the feelings of respect and consideration the giver sends to the receiver would be expressed, and further, I wanted them to feel the “special curiosity and excitement” held within it. Bojagi originally has the practical purpose of wrapping and carrying objects, but the bojagi form expressed in my work places meaning beyond a visual image, functioning as a means of communication with the other while also emphasizing an inclusiveness that seeks to embrace everything in the world. Objects are concealed, so it is not possible to know what is inside the bojagi, but as the work title “The Precious Message” suggests, the special decorativeness of the wrapped tool leads it to be read as a precious and special message.
A rigid Western bag allows objects to be placed within a limited space, but a soft Eastern bojagi is an object with a flexible width and embrace that can include either something small or something large. The motif of bojagi, which holds and embraces painful stories or scars, whether nature, humans, or inanimate things, and further contains even the meaning of healing, is extremely attractive to me. In our bojagi, no matter what is wrapped, its form becomes different. If you wrap something round, it becomes round, if you wrap something long, it becomes long, if you wrap something flat, it becomes flat, and if there is nothing to wrap, it even performs the magic of returning to a flat plane.
The late Korean literature scholar Eo Ryeong Lee said this: “If all tools and all facilities were designed not like bags but like bojagi, and came to embody the philosophy of mutual exchange between having and not having, would human civilization in the future not become more humane and more comfortable?” Moreover, bojagi does not only have such flexibility. It arouses curiosity about what has been secretly kept inside. If you untie one knot of a bojagi that has wrapped something precious, it feels as though an endlessly unfolding bundle of stories, carefully kept, will spread out.
