SEONG TAEJIN
성태진
성태진의 작업은 나무판 위에 새겨진 한 인간의 실존적 고백이다. 그는 조각칼로 판을 파내며, 삶이 인간에게 남기는 상흔과 흔적을 그대로 드러낸다. 어린 시절의 절대적 영웅 태권V는 그에게 ‘존재의 본질’이 이미 주어진 듯 보이는 상징이었다. 그러나 IMF 시기의 혼란과 좌절 속에서 그는 깨닫는다. 인간은 영웅으로 태어나지 않으며, **“존재가 본질에 앞선다”**는 실존주의적 통찰처럼, 스스로를 새기며 자신의 의미를 구성해 나가야 한다는 사실을.
대표 연작〈태권V의 유쾌한 자력갱생〉에서 태권V는 더 이상 우주의 구원자가 아니다. 그는 배달을 하고, 술에 취해 휘청이며, 실연에 울고, 어설픈 삶을 견디는 불완전한 존재다. 성태진이 판 위에 글귀를 새기듯, 인간은 실패와 결핍 속에서 자기 삶의 문장을 새겨 넣는다. 완성된 본질을 부여받지 않은 채, 스스로의 본질을 창조해 나가는 존재—그것이 그의 태권V이자, 그의 자화상이다.
작품 속 마징가와 태권V의 대비는 한 개인의 성장사를 넘어, 왜곡된 역사와 세대의 기억을 환기한다. 팔만대장경을 새기던 조상들이 나라의 염원을 판 위에 새겼듯, 성태진은 시조와 만화 주제가, 유행가를 함께 새겨 개인의 염원과 시대적 호흡을 결합한다.
성태진의 태권V는 신화적 영웅에서 실존적 인간으로 내려온다. 그리고 그 변화는 곧 작가 자신이 ‘주어진 본질을 사는 존재’에서 ‘스스로 본질을 만들어가는 존재’로 성장하는 과정이기도 하다. 그의 작업은 묻는다 — “너는 너 자신의 의미를 어떻게 새기고 있는가?”
Seong Taejin’s work is an existential confession of a human being carved on a wooden plate. He carves out the plate with a carving knife, and reveals the scars and traces that life leaves on a human being as they are. The absolute hero Taekwon V of his childhood was for him a symbol that seemed as if the “essence of existence” had already been given. However, amid the confusion and frustration of the IMF period, he realizes. A human being is not born a hero, and like the existentialist insight that “existence precedes essence,” one must carve oneself and build one’s own meaning.
In the representative series <Taekwon V’s Cheerful Self Reliance>, Taekwon V is no longer the savior of the universe. He makes deliveries, staggers drunk, cries over heartbreak, and endures a clumsy life, an incomplete being. Just as Sung Taejin carves phrases onto the plate, a human being carves the sentences of one’s life amid failure and lack. Without being granted a completed essence, a being that creates one’s own essence, that is his Taekwon V, and his self portrait.
The contrast between Mazinger and Taekwon V in the work goes beyond an individual growth narrative, and calls to mind distorted history and the memory of a generation. Just as ancestors who carved the Tripitaka Koreana carved the nation’s wishes onto wooden plates, Seong Taejin carves sijo, cartoon theme songs, and popular songs together, combining personal wishes and the breath of the era.
Seong Taejin’s Taekwon V comes down from a mythical hero to an existential human. And that change is also the process by which the artist himself grows from a being who “lives a given essence” to a being who “creates essence by oneself.” His work asks, “How are you carving your own meaning?”
