윤기원
나는 살아오면서 수많은 인연과 마주했고, 그 만남과 헤어짐 속에서 또 다른 삶을 경험했다. 내 그림 속에 등장하는 인물들은 바로 그렇게 나와 관계 맺었던 사람들이다. 그들을 그리는 일은 나 자신을 들여다보는 일이기도 했다. 사랑했던 사람, 우러러보던 우상, 그들과의 만남이 내 삶을 어떻게 변화시켰는지, 그들의 존재가 내 안에 어떤 흔적을 남겼는지를 캔버스에 표현한다.
만일 내가 음악가였다면 멜로디로, 시인이었다면 언어로 그들을 노래했을 것이다. 하지만 나는 그림을 그리는 사람이기에, 나의 언어는 붓과 색이다. 그림은 나와 그들 사이의 인연을 기록하고 소통하는 가장 솔직한 방식이다.
캔버스 속 인물들은 그들이 나와 함께했던 시절의 과거를 품고 있다. 그 시절의 삶과 역사는 오직 그들만의 것이 아니며, 나와 관계된 '인연'이라는 굴레 속에서 또 다른 이야기를 만들어낸다. 그리고 그 이야기는 다시 또 다른 누군가의 삶과 역사 속으로 스며든다. 이처럼 나의 그림은 단순히 한 사람의 얼굴을 그리는 것을 넘어, 관계와 역사가 반복되며 확장되는 삶의 순환을 담아내는 그릇이 된다.
인물화를 통해 나는 지나간 시간과 인연에 대화를 건넨다. 그림 속의 인물들과 과거를 마주하며, 그들과의 만남이 남긴 의미를 재해석하고, 그 경험을 토대로 한 단계씩 성장해 나아간다. 나의 초상들은 결국, 수많은 인연 속에서 형성된 '나'라는 존재의 자화상이기도 한 것이다.
I encountered countless connections as I lived, and within those meetings and partings, I experienced another life. The figures that appear in my paintings are those people with whom I formed relationships in that way. Painting them was also a way of looking into myself. I express on the canvas how the people I loved, the idols I looked up to, and my encounters with them changed my life, and what traces their existence left within me.
If I had been a musician, I would have sung of them with melody, and if I had been a poet, with language. But I am a person who paints, so my language is the brush and color. Painting is the most honest way to record and communicate the connections between me and them.
The figures on the canvas hold the past of the time when they were with me. The life and history of that time are not only theirs, and within the yoke of a 'connection' related to me, they create another story. And that story seeps again into the life and history of someone else. In this way, my paintings go beyond simply painting one person’s face, and become a vessel that contains the cycle of life in which relationships and history repeat and expand.
Through figure painting, I speak to the past time and connections. Facing the figures in my paintings and the past, I reinterpret the meaning left by my encounters with them, and based on that experience, I grow forward step by step. My portraits, in the end, are also a self portrait of the being called 'me' formed within countless connections.
