내가 먹은 것이 곧 나다. 햇빛이 익힌 음식을 섭생하며 자연이 내 몸에 스며들고 ‘살아’ 있음을 느낀다. 양분을 제공하는 식물과 이를 섭취하는 인간, 모든 생명체는 정밀하게 연결되어 있다. 땅은 삶의 터전이자 생명을 잉태하고 있는 한없이 넉넉한 엄마 품이다. 나는 달과 여성, 절기와 땅에서 수확된 곡식, 채소를 소재로 생명성을 탐구하면서 몸과 마음이 유기적으로 조화로운, 생활 속 ‘양생(養生)’을 모색한다.
나는 경험한 것을 그린다. 매끼 식구들의 먹거리를 준비하면서 식재료를 만난다. 소소한 듯하지만 거대한 삶의 영역이다. 영감은 하늘에서 뚝 떨어지지 않는다. 평범한 일상 속 관찰이 경험과 만날 때 비로소 의미를 얻고 나는 그 생각들을 화면 위에 직조한다.
모든 생명은 그물망처럼 얽혀 공생한다. ‘생(生)’은 끼니와 끼니 사이의 연속이다. 살림은 누군가를 ‘살리는’ 숭고한 행위다. 그럼에도 불구하고 나는 이 반복에서 벗어나고 싶었다. 다람쥐 쳇바퀴 같은 부엌데기 엄마의 노동으로 여겨졌기 때문이었다. 그러던 어느 날, 냉장고 속 오래된 감자에서 돋아난 싹을 발견했다. 단순한 먹거리로만 인식했던 감자가 숨 쉬고 있었던 것이다! 냉장고 속의 식재료들은 이렇게 ‘살아있다’고, 조용하지만 커다란 깨우침을 주었다.
돌이켜보니 부엌은 식구(食口)들에게 영양분을 제공해 생명을 지탱하는 장소였다. 시선이 바뀌자 부엌과 작업실의 공통점이 보였다. 부엌이 몸을 살리는 공간이라면, 작업실은 마음을 살리는 공간이다. 이 두 곳은 모두 무언가를 길러내고 만들어내는, 새로움을 창조하는 마법의 공간들이다. 부엌의 살림이 작업실의 그림 속으로 자연스럽게 스며들었다. 식탁 위 재료들은 역설적으로 창작의 원천이 되어 상상의 세계로 나아가는 통로가 되었다.
곡식과 야채는 연약해 보이지만 생존하기 위해 경쟁하는 강인한 생명 덩어리다. 식물이면서도 동물처럼 보이는 이중성을 내포하는 존재들. 나는 이를 식물 초상처럼 혹은 풍경처럼 풀어내며 한지, 견, 캔버스, 나무, 세라믹, 프레스코 등 다양한 바탕 위에 염료와 안료, 백토, 밀랍 등을 사용하였다.
삶은 완수해야 할 프로젝트가 아니라 펼쳐지는 이야기다. 서로 다른 존재들이 관계 속에서 조화를 이루는 과정이며 생명을 북돋는 양생의 장이다. ‘한 마리 제비를 보고 천하의 봄을 깨닫는다’는 것처럼, 일상의 얽히고설킨 관계망 속에서 순환하는 생명 에너지를 발견하고 이를 표현하고자 하였다.
You are what you eat. As I nourish myself with food ripened by sunlight, nature permeates my body and I feel that I am alive. Plants that provide nutrients and humans who consume them—all living beings are intricately connected. The earth is both the ground of life and the infinitely generous womb that conceives it. Through motifs of the moon, women, seasonal cycles, and grains and vegetables harvested from the land, I explore vitality while seeking a harmonious integration of body and mind—yangsaeng (養生), the cultivation of life, within everyday living.
I paint what I have experienced. Preparing meals for my family each day, I encounter ingredients. It may seem ordinary, yet it belongs to a vast realm of life. Inspiration does not simply fall from the sky. Only when observation within daily life meets lived experience does it gain meaning, and I weave these thoughts onto the surface of the canvas.
All life coexists, intertwined like a net. “Life” is the continuity between one meal and the next. Housekeeping—salrim—is a noble act of sustaining another’s life. And yet, I once longed to escape this repetition, as it felt like the ceaseless labor of a mother confined to the kitchen. Then one day, I discovered sprouts emerging from an old potato in the refrigerator. The potato, which I had regarded merely as food, was breathing. The ingredients inside the refrigerator quietly revealed to me that they were alive, offering a subtle yet profound awakening.
Looking back, the kitchen is a place that sustains life by nourishing those who share food together. When my perspective shifted, I began to see the common ground between the kitchen and the studio. If the kitchen is a space that sustains the body, the studio sustains the mind. Both are magical spaces where something is cultivated, created, and brought anew into the world. The life of the kitchen naturally seeped into the paintings of the studio. The ingredients on the dining table paradoxically became the source of creation—a passageway into the realm of imagination.
Grains and vegetables may appear fragile, yet they are resilient masses of life competing to survive. They embody a duality—plants that sometimes resemble animals. I unfold them as if they were plant portraits or landscapes, expressing them on hanji, silk, canvas, wood, ceramic, and fresco surfaces using dyes, pigments, white clay, and beeswax.
Life is not a project to be completed but a story that unfolds. It is a process in which different beings achieve harmony through relationship, a field of yangsaeng that nurtures vitality. Just as “from the sight of a single swallow, one senses the coming of spring,” I seek to discover and express the circulating life energy woven through the tangled web of everyday relationships.
