선으로 공간에 그림을 그리는 조각가 김병진의 작업은 독특하다. 서정적이면서도 강인하고 귀여우면서도 우아하다.
작가의 열정만큼이나 다양한 성질을 가지고 있는 김병진의 작업들은 묘한 호기심을 자극한다.

김병진의 작품들이 관람자에게 다양한 감정을 불러 일으키는 이유는 작품 속에 서로 다른 조형언어들이 공존하고 있기 때문이다. 작가는 다루는 재료와 형태에 이질적인 것들을 혼합하여 상반된 요소들이 교차하는 새로운 공간을 창조한다.

여러 요소들이 반복, 충돌, 상쇄되면서 이것은 작품을 다양하게 읽을 수 있게 하는 출발점이자 목적지가 된다.
김병진 작가의 신작 <MAKING FACES> 작품 시리즈는 만들어지는 얼굴을 보여준다. 켜켜이 겹쳐진 면들이 모종의 얼굴 표정을 만들어내고 한마디로 정확히 정의할 수 없는 형태는 그나마 분명한 색을 통해 바라보고 있는 우리가 얼굴의 이미지를 연상하는 것에 약간의 힌트를 줄 뿐이다.

김병진 작가의 새로운 작품은 그동안 선 작업이 주를 이루었던 그의 작업 방식과는 다르게 다층적 면으로 구성되었다. 예전 작업에서 무수한 선이 복잡한 수수께끼 같은 느낌을 주었다면, 이제는 좀 더 간결한 형태만큼 더 많은 설명을 거두어 버렸다.

“예술은 강요가 아닌 느낌이다”라는 지론으로 조각회화와 회화조각을 자유로이 구현하며 순수미술과 일러스트, 공공설치미술의 공존을 이뤄낸 그였지만, 감정을 소리로 표현하는 동물과 달리 표정으로 감정을 드러내거나 숨길 수 있는 인간의 얼굴 이면은 꽤 난해한 주제다. 따라서 변화를 가장 잘 요약하는 얼굴을 나타내고자 조각의 레이어들에 각각 색을 입혔다.

Repetition, collision, and cancellation become both the point of departure and the destination, inviting multiple readings and experiences of the same piece. In his latest series, MAKING FACES, Kim reveals the forming of a face. Layered planes gather into expressions—yet what they portray eludes clear definition. The forms whisper only the slightest hint of a visage, aided not by shape but by the clarity of color that drapes them.

This new work departs from Kim’s earlier focus on intricate line-based structures. Where countless threads once wove dense, enigmatic riddles, now cleaner forms emerge, shorn of explanation, pared to their emotive essence.

Guided by his belief that “art is a feeling, not a command,” Kim fluidly merges sculptural painting and painterly sculpture, bridging fine art, illustration, and public installations. Yet human facial expression—so unlike the unguarded vocal emotion of animals—remains a profound enigma. It conceals and reveals with equal ease. To explore this paradox, Kim layers his sculptures, each stratum bearing its own hue, seeking to distill transformation into the abstracted memory of a face.
