이번 전시, ‘잠재풍경’은 바야흐로 인공지능의 시대, 나와 같은 고민을 하는 수많은 이들에게 ‘어떻게 하면 비평적으로 우리를 더 잘 이해하며, 창의적으로 세상을 더 잘 활용하고, 나아가 마음껏 예술하며 내 삶을 더 잘 즐길 수 있는가’에 대한 나름의 해법을 제시한다.
이를테면 시대가 변한다고 사람의 본질이 바뀌진 않는다. 물론 ‘전술’의 융통성을 발휘할 순 있겠지만, 분명한 건, ‘전략’으로서 진정으로 ‘사람됨의 가치’를 추구하다 보면 어느새 ‘내 마음속 풍경’에서 그동안 요원했던 ‘궁극의 행복’을 비로소 발견한다는 사실이다. 아, 내가 다구나!
이를 깨닫기 위해서는 평상시에 주변의 ‘잠재풍경’에 대한 ‘심미안’을 키워 지속적으로 내 안의 무한한 ‘잠재적 가능성’을 발굴하자. 그리고 예술적으로 이를 표현하고, 나아가 예술담론으로 음미하며 공유하자. 그러다 보면 드디어 스스로 ‘뿌듯한 만족감’을 누리며 주변에 ‘흥미로운 자극’을 공유하는 나 자신에 감탄할 수도. 어쩌면 그걸로 충분하다. 부디 내 작품이 여기저기 잠복기의 ‘잠재풍경’을 예술적으로 활성화하는 생산적인 기폭제가 되기를.
오늘도 일어나면 가장 먼저 내 마음속 ‘잠재풍경’을 지긋이 바라본다. 그야말로 ‘완전 새로운 하루(Brand New Day)’의 시작이다. 그리고 선택지는 상상하기 나름이다. 그저 그러고 싶은 ‘생각의 씨앗’으로 미래 가치의 희망에 가득 찬 ‘순수한 영혼’이 되거나, 혹은 ‘연상의 마법’으로 사차원의 선형적인 시간 축을 이리저리 편집하는 ‘시간여행자’가 되거나, 아니면 ‘다중우주’를 넘나들며 객관적으로 나를 보는 ‘신통한 도사’가 되는 등, 언제나 우리네 세상에 할 일은 많다. 그리고 결정은 내가 한다. 그러고 보니 나 좀 바쁘네.
This exhibition, Latent Landscape, offers a personal response to the question that many like myself face in this era of artificial intelligence: How can we understand ourselves more critically, engage with the world more creatively, and ultimately live more artfully and joyfully?
Times may change, but the essence of being human remains constant. We can be flexible with our tactics, of course, but when we commit to the “value of being human” as our true strategy, we eventually find ourselves face to face with the “ultimate happiness” that once felt so distant—revealed at last within the landscape of our inner world. Ah—so it was all me, after all!
To arrive at this realization, we must cultivate aesthetic sensitivity to the latent landscapes that surround us daily. Through that lens, we continue to unearth the infinite latent potential within ourselves. Then let us express it artistically, savor it through artistic discourse, and share it with others. As we do, we may find ourselves, surprisingly, filled with a satisfying pride—and even astonished by our own capacity to spark intriguing stimuli in those around us. Perhaps that is enough. I sincerely hope this exhibition becomes a catalytic spark that activates latent landscapes lying dormant here and there.
Each morning, I begin the day by gazing softly at the latent landscape within my own heart. That is the true beginning of a Brand New Day. And the paths forward are limited only by imagination: I might become a pure soul, filled with hope for the value of the future, born from a mere seed of thought. Or I might become a time traveler, editing the linear axis of time with the magic of association. Or perhaps a visionary sage, who traverses multiverses and views myself with objective clarity. In any case, there is always much to be done in this world of ours. And the decision is mine. Come to think of it, I’m a bit busy.
