더 리플렉션 : 상대적이고 절대적인
The reflection : relative & absolute

변하지 않는 영원성을 금과 자개 옻칠을 이용하여 빛으로 작업하는 나의 작품 세계는 황금이라는 물성의 본질과 연결된 골드큐브의 비 연결을 전제로 한 연속성에 주목해야 한다.
큐브가 이어지지 않고 한 칸 건너 격자로 이어지면서 작품 형태의 동질성을 유지한다. 그리고 바닥에는 비패턴적 자개 위에 페인팅이 있다. 문제는 이 오랜 숨결을 가지고 있는 소재들을 관객들에게 어떻게 전달하느냐이다. 이를 위해 금이 가지는 ‘반사의 미학(aesthetics of reflection)’을 사용한다. 큐브 면의 반사는 있는 그대로를 보여주는 거울과는 다르다.
빛을 이용해 형상을 가두기도 하고 고립시키기도 한다. 그리고 고정된 의미를 다양한 각도로 끊임없이 확산시킨다.

반사를 뜻하는 Reflection은 중간에 C 대신에 X를 쓰기도 한다. Reflexion. X는 좌우대칭인 동시에 상하 대칭이 되기도 하고 한쪽 끝에서 시작해서 내려가다 다시 반대 방향으로 올라가고 때로는 내려가다 꺾어지기도 한다. 영어에서 X는 10, 틀림, 편지 끝에서는 키스, 외계인 등 미지의 세계를 의미한다. X가 이렇게 다양한 뜻으로 쓰이는 현상을 자의적으로 해석하면 반사가 상대적이기 때문이다. 미러 효과(mirror effect)는 지극히 상대적이어서 자신의 모습을 반대쪽에서 그대로 나타낸다.
그래서 나의 모습은 상대의 모습이 되고 상대의 모습은 또다시 나의 모습이 된다. 동시에 미러링이 수없이 반복된다 해도 절대적인 본질은 변하지 않는다.

이번 '더 리플렉션 : 상대적이고 절대적인' 전시에서는 지금까지 주로 시도했던 정사각형의 프레임에서 벗어나 십자가, 직사각형, 핵사곤, 비정형 등 다양한 형태의 프레임에 도전한다. 이미지의 상대적인 파레르곤이 전달하는 반사의 아름다움이 다양한 형태로 투영되어 보는 즐거움에 형태적 미가 더해져 아름다움에 대한 구원의 폭이 넓어질 것이다. 작품과 관객이 리플랙션을 통해 하나가 되는 ‘상대적이고 절대적인’ 반사작용이다. 나의 작품을 최종적으로 완성하는 것은 관객들 마음의 여백이 반사되는 것이다.



The Reflection: Relative & Absolute

My work explores the eternal and the immutable, using gold, mother-of-pearl, and lacquer to express light. At the core lies the paradox of continuity through disconnection—embodied in the gold cubes that, though not physically linked, maintain a lattice structure that sustains formal unity. The base of each piece rests upon non-patterned mother-of-pearl, painted to further deepen the visual texture. The challenge is how to communicate the breath of time embedded in these materials to the viewer. To this end, I engage the aesthetics of reflection inherent in gold.

Unlike a mirror that simply reveals what is, the reflective surfaces of the cubes confine, isolate, and multiply form through light. Meaning becomes unfixed, scattering endlessly in every direction.

The word "reflection" is sometimes stylized as reflexion, where the letter X—symmetrical both horizontally and vertically—becomes symbolic. It descends and ascends, bends and turns. In English, X signifies ten, error, a kiss, or even the unknown. To interpret this semantically rich symbol is to recognize the relativity of reflection itself. Mirror effects are inherently dualistic: one’s image becomes the other’s, and the other’s image becomes one’s own. Yet, even as mirrored repetition proliferates, an absolute essence remains untouched.

This exhibition, The Reflection: Relative & Absolute, departs from the square frames I have used in the past. Here, I experiment with crosses, rectangles, hexagons, and amorphous shapes. The relative parergon—the frame around the image—projects beauty through reflection in diverse geometries, adding formal delight to the visual experience. In this way, the scope of salvation through beauty is expanded.

The reflective process that occurs between viewer and artwork becomes both relative and absolute. My work reaches completion only when the open spaces of the viewer’s heart are mirrored within it.
