내가 그림을 처음 그리기 시작한 때는 여느 아이들처럼 초등학교를 들어가기 한참 전부터였다. 아무런 경계도 제약도 없이 그저 ‘상상’을 밖으로 끄집어 내는 아주 재미있는 놀이였다. 성장하면서 나는 서서히 그 재미있는 놀이에서 멀어져 갔고 그저 평범하게 직장을 다니고, 결혼을 하고, 아이가 태어났다.

내 나이 서른여섯이 되었을 무렵 나는 다시 그 재미있는 놀이가 하고 싶어졌다. 그렇게 다시 그림을 그리기 시작했다. 그러나 그때처럼 단순히 상상만을 끄집어 낼 수가 없었다. 어떤 그림을 어떻게, 어떤 기법으로, 어떤 주제로 표현해 내야 하는지에 대한 아주 많은 의문과 제약들이 내 상상하기를 무디게 만들었다. 그래서 생각하기를 멈추고 붓을 든 손이 움직이는 대로 내버려두기로 했다. 붓을 쥔 손은 캔버스 위에 선, 면, 공간들을 만들어갔다.

나는 다시 재미있는 상상을 꺼내기 시작했다.
상상은 형상을 만들어 가고 그만의 언어로 내게 말을 건넨다.

알파벳도, 화려한 스토리도 없지만 그의 언어는 이른 아침 모카 향기처럼 다정하고 친절하다. 구름처럼 가볍고 청량하다. 모양을 갖추게 된 상상은 갖가지 색을 입고 하나의 그림이 된다.

비로소 나는 붓을 내려 놓는다.



I first began to draw, like many children, long before I ever entered elementary school.
It was simply a delightful game—pulling “imagination” outward, without boundaries or rules.
As I grew, I gradually drifted away from that game.
I lived an ordinary life, got a job, got married, and had a child.

At thirty-six, I wanted to play that delightful game again.
So I began to paint once more.
But this time, I couldn’t simply pull out my imagination like before.
Countless questions and constraints dulled my ability to imagine:
What should I paint? How should I paint it? What techniques, what themes?

So, I chose to stop thinking.
I let my hand, holding the brush, move as it wished.
It carved out lines, shapes, and spaces on the canvas.

And once again, I began to draw out joyful imaginations.
They formed into shapes, whispering to me in their own quiet language.

Though they had no alphabet, no grand narrative,
their voice was as gentle and kind as the scent of morning mocha—
as light and crisp as a drifting cloud.
Imagination, now with form, dressed in color, became a painting.

And finally, I set the brush down.
