HONG Ilhwa
홍일화
숲을 그리고 있다. 그림 속 숲은 단지 나무와 풀, 짐승들만을 담지 않는다. 그 속에는 기억이 살아 있고, 고요한 숨결이 흐르며, 우리가 잊어버린 신비와 약속이 다시 태동한다. 한때 숲은 사람들의 집이었다. 그러나 시간이 흐르며 사람들은 문명의 편리를 좇아 숲을 떠났고, 숲은 단지 자원을 위한 배경이 되었다. 인간은 보호라는 이름으로 숲을 분석하고 나누고 정리했지만, 그 안에 깃든 신비와 존중은 점점 사라져 갔다. 믿음은, 그렇게 소리 없이 꺼졌다.
사람을 그리고 있다. 말과 붓과 문장으로, 하나의 기도를 짓듯이 그림을 그리고 글을 쓴다. 내 글 속에, 그림 속에 등장하는 숲에 남은 자들은 자연의 수호자가 되어, 떠나간 이들이 남긴 흔적 속에서도 고요히 자연을 지키며 살아간다. 그들의 눈을 통해 나는 숲을 다시 바라본다.
I paint the forest. But the forest in my paintings is not merely made of trees, grass, or beasts. Within it, memories are alive, quiet breaths flow, and the mysteries and promises we once forgot begin to stir anew.
The forest was once home to humankind. Over time, however, people left the forest in pursuit of the comforts of civilization, reducing it to a mere backdrop for resources. In the name of protection, we analyzed, divided, and organized the forest—yet the reverence and mystery once held within gradually faded. Faith, thus, was extinguished—silently.
I paint people. With words, brushes, and sentences, I create paintings like one composes a prayer. In my writing and in the forests that appear in my paintings, those who remain have become guardians of nature. Even amidst the traces left by those who departed, they live on quietly, preserving the natural world. Through their eyes, I come to see the forest anew.
