나는 피자를 무척 좋아한다.
어릴 적 특별한 날이면 가족과 함께 피자집을 찾았고, 유학 시절에는 거대한 치즈피자를 시켜 며칠을 먹어도 질리지 않았다. 좋아하는 음식 TOP 3 안에서 피자는 늘 단단히 자리를 지켜왔다. 지금도 신선한 마르게리타 피자를 떠올리면 입안에 침이 고인다.
피자는 도우 위에 어떤 조합을 얹느냐에 따라 무한히 달라진다. 페퍼로니, 피망, 올리브, 버섯을 더하면 풍미가 가득한 콤비네이션이 되고, 파인애플을 얹으면 짭짤하고 고소하며 새콤달콤한 하와이안, 치즈를 겹겹이 올리면 쫀득한 치즈피자가 된다. 기호에 따라 케첩이나 스리라차, 일회용 핫소스, 갈릭 소스, 파마산 치즈를 곁들이면 또 다른 재미가 생긴다. 이처럼 토핑과 소스에 따라 이름과 맛, 그리고 각자의 추억까지 달라진다.
나의 작업도 이와 닮았다.
선명하거나 흐릿하게 떠오르는 기억의 파편들이 피자의 토핑처럼 변형되고 조합되어, 도우 같은 화면 위에 놓이며 하나의 세계를 만든다. 그 결과물은 개인적인 경험을 넘어, 작품을 바라보는 관객의 기억과 섞여 또 다른 맛과 이야기를 만들어낸다.
이번 전시 〈슈퍼 나이스 피자〉는 그런 과정을 보여주려 한다. 다양한 토핑으로 무한한 피자가 만들어지듯, 나의 기억의 파편도 무한한 세계를 창조한다. 이처럼 관객들도 자신의 입맛과 감성을 더해 또 하나의 〈슈퍼 나이스 피자〉를 함께 만들길 바란다.
I love pizza very much.
On special days in my childhood my family and I would go to a pizza place, and during my study abroad years I would order a giant cheese pizza and eat it for days without getting tired of it. In my top three favorite foods, pizza has always held a firm place. Even now, when I think of a fresh margherita pizza, my mouth waters.
Pizza can change infinitely depending on what combination you place on the dough. With pepperoni, bell peppers, olives, and mushrooms, it becomes a rich combination. With pineapple, it becomes a Hawaiian pizza that is salty, savory, and sweet and sour. With layers of cheese, it becomes a chewy cheese pizza. Depending on taste, you can add ketchup, sriracha, single serve hot sauce, garlic sauce, or Parmesan, and you get another kind of fun. In this way, the name, the flavor, and even each person’s memories change with the toppings and sauces.
My work is similar to this.
Fragments of memory that surface vividly or faintly are transformed and recombined like pizza toppings, then placed on a screen like the dough to form a single world. The result goes beyond personal experience, it blends with the viewer’s memories and creates another flavor and another story.
This exhibition, Super Nice Pizza, aims to show that process. Just as endless pizzas are created from many toppings, the fragments of my memory create infinite worlds. I hope viewers will add their own taste and sensibility, and make another Super Nice Pizza together.
