특별하지 않은 일상의 기록
윤슬이 반짝이는 바다 위에서 노란 튜브를 타고 둥둥 떠 있는 사람.
붉은 영산홍이 만개한 꽃밭에서 셀카를 찍는 연인.
화사한 스키복을 입고 하얀 설원을 활강하는 사람들.
2006년부터 나는 스키장, 해변, 공원, 산과 같은 휴양지에서 여가를 즐기는 사람들의 모습을 그리고 있다. 여가라는 특별하지 않은 일상이 현대미술의 소재가 될 수 있을까? 나는 오랜 시간 이 질문에 대해 스스로 답을 찾아가며 그림을 그려왔다.
최근들어 사람들이 ‘워라밸’이라는 말을 자주 사용한다. 일과 삶의 균형, 그 안에서의 쉼과 여유. 많은 사람들이 치열한 하루를 보내면서도, 휴식과 소소한 행복을 중요하게 여긴다. 그리고 나는 그 풍경들을 화폭에 담는다.
내 직업은 화가다. 사람들은 화가라고 하면 다양한 이미지를 떠올린다. 고통 속에서 그림을 그리다 생을 마감한 빈센트 반 고흐를 떠올릴 수도 있고, 천재적인 능력으로 후견인의 후원을 받으며 작업했던 김홍도나 레오나르도 다빈치를 생각할 수도 있다.
내가 그림을 공부하던 1990년대 말, 미술계는 영국의 YBA(Young British Artists) 작가들로 떠들썩했다. 그들의 자극적이고 개념적인 작품들은 대학 수업에도 자주 등장했고, 나는 그런 것이 현대미술의 특징이라고 자연스럽게 받아들이며 20대를 보냈다. 하지만 그런 세계가 나랑은 어딘가 맞지 않았다. 나는 따뜻하고 아름다운 그림을 그리고 싶었다.
살면서 가장 행복했던 순간들을 떠올렸고, 그 장면들을 그리기 시작했다. 졸업 후에도 그 마음은 변하지 않았다. 어쩌면 ‘내가 틀리지 않았다’는 걸 증명해보고 싶었던 걸지도 모른다. 그림을 통해 사람들의 감성을 10%라도 부드럽게 만들 수 있다면, 굳이 ‘현대미술’이라는 틀 안에 들어가지 않아도 나만의 세계를 만들 수 있을 것이라고 생각했다.
40년 가까운 시간 동안 쉬지 않고 그림을 그리고 전시하며 많은 사람들을 만나왔다. 그러면서 알게 됐다. ‘따뜻함을 전할 수 있는 능력’이 얼마나 큰 힘을 가질 수 있는지를.
지금 내 그림들은 여러 미술관에 소장되어 있고, 더 많은 작품들이 개인 소장자들의 공간 속에서 함께 살아가고 있다. 언젠가 내가 세상을 떠난 후에도, 그 그림들은 꽤 오랫동안 세상에 남아 있을 것이다. 그리고 사람들에게 이렇게 말해주었으면 한다.
“인생에서 가장 소중한 것은 결국 사랑하는 사람들과 함께 즐거운 시간을 보냈던 평범한 하루였다고.”
내 그림 앞에서 사람들이 자신만의 추억을 떠올리고, 꿈을 꾸고, 오늘을 살아갈 수 있다면. 비단 지금 이 시대뿐 아니라, 100년 뒤, 500년 뒤에도 누군가 그런 감정을 느낄 수 있다면. 나는 그것만으로 충분하다.
나는 화가라는 내 직업이 만족스럽다. 앞으로도 그렇게 살아갈 것이다. 따뜻한 장면들을 찾아다니고 열심히 그림 안에 담아내며.
A Record of an Ordinary Everyday Life

Since 2006, I have been painting people enjoying leisure at resorts such as ski slopes, beaches, parks, and mountains. Can the ordinary everyday life called leisure become material for contemporary art? For a long time, I have been painting while finding my own answer to this question.
Recently, people often use the word “work life balance.” Balance between work and life, rest and ease within it. Many people spend an intense day, yet value rest and small happiness. And I place those scenes on the canvas.
My profession is a painter. When people think of a painter, they imagine many different images. They may think of Vincent van Gogh, who ended his life after painting in pain, or they may think of Kim Hong do or Leonardo da Vinci, who worked with the support of patrons through genius ability.
In the late 1990s, when I was studying painting, the art world was abuzz with Britain’s YBA (Young British Artists). Their provocative and conceptual works often appeared in university classes, and I naturally accepted that as a characteristic of contemporary art as I spent my twenties. But that world did not quite fit me. I wanted to paint warm and beautiful pictures.
I recalled the happiest moments in my life, and I began to paint those scenes. Even after graduation, that 마음 did not change. Perhaps I wanted to prove that “I was not wrong.” I thought that if I could make people’s feelings even ten percent softer through painting, I could build my own world without necessarily entering the frame called “contemporary art.”
For nearly forty years, I have continued without stopping to paint, exhibit, and meet many people. Through that, I came to know how much power the “ability to convey warmth” can have.
Now my paintings are held in the collections of various museums, and more works are living together within the spaces of private collectors. Even after I leave this world someday, those paintings will remain in the world for quite a long time. And I hope they would tell people this.
“That the most precious thing in life was, in the end, an ordinary day when we spent a joyful time together with the people we love.”
If people can recall their own memories, dream, and live today in front of my paintings. If someone can feel such emotions not only in this era, but also one hundred years from now, five hundred years from now. That is enough for me.
I am satisfied with my profession as a painter. I will live that way 앞으로 as well. Seeking warm scenes, and working hard to contain them within my paintings.
